Whale-Watching Tours and Festivals Along the Pacific

From the deck of a boat or a sandy shore, the California coast offers some of the best seats for watching the annual migration of gray whales. Naturalists with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, one of the world's oldest and largest ocean and earth science research facilities, will lead twice-daily whale-watching tours starting Dec. 26, aboard San Diego Harbor Excursion vessels. Scripps Oceanography was launched in 1903, and 12 years later opened its first aquarium, now called Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Whale of a Tale: Aquarium Kicks Off Gray Whale Migration Season with Family

Every year about this time, California gray whales -- averaging 45 feet in length and 45 tons in weight -- swim south past San Diego in their annual migration to their winter home off the Baja coast. To familiarize the public with the whales and their migration, Birch Aquarium
at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, will kick off whale-watching season from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 20, with its most popular Family Days program, "A Whale of a Time."

Things are getting spooky over at Birch Aquarium at Scripps ahead of Halloween. Visitors are coming face to face with some creeps from the deep. You can also get elbow-deep in ghoulish experiments with mad scientists, or wrap your tentacles around a slimy sea discovery. It's that time of year again when dark creatures of the night come out to surprise all the little landlubbers dressed in costume.
