PRINCIPLES OF SCIENCE INQUIRY FOR THE K-8 CLASSROOM!
Teach even your youngest students how to ask scientifically oriented questions, and initiate a life-long learning process of developing explanations that can connect their science knowledge base. Workshop participants will experience easy-to-use examples of hands-on science and techniques for making subtle shifts that help create a more inquiry-based atmosphere in your science classroom. This workshop also includes a brief trip to La Jolla Shores sandy beach for a low-tide investigation, offering the opportunity to practice questioning strategies in the field.

SO-CAL ROV!
Want to get your high school students excited about literature, history, math, science, and engineering? Take part in the 9th annual So-Cal ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Fly-off. The Southern California regional competition will be hosted by Birch Aquarium at Scripps in April 2009. Top teams will advance to the national competition hosted by Marine Advance Technology Education in June 2009. Competitors will learn to use simple, common materials to design and build a ROV. They will then use these ROVs in real-world applications of exploration and utility during the competition. For more information on the competition or advice about how to put a team together, please see ROV Flyoff or call the ROV Coordinator at 858-822-5331.
NATIONAL OCEAN SCIENCES BOWL (NOSB)
High school teachers—gather your most interested science students and join Birch Aquarium at Scripps for the 12th annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition. NOSB, a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership and its partners, is a high school academic competition on topics related to the study of the oceans through Scripps campus tours, field trips, and other ocean-related activities. This program is intended to increase knowledge of the oceans for high school students, their teachers, and their parents.
Birch Aquarium is the host site for the La Jolla Surf Bowl, the Southern California Regional Competition to be held February 21, 2009.
